Paper 1 — language

Register and tone

A formal task loses marks when the words slide into slang. Match the words to the reader.

CAPS

Grade 12 · Afrikaans First Additional Language · Register and tone

Language structures are tested on words in a real passage.

  • Parts of speech

A noun names. A verb does or is. An adjective describes a noun. An adverb says how, when, where or to what degree. Name the job the word does in this sentence, not the job it might do in another one.

  • Concord and tense

The verb must agree with the doer. “Each” and “every” take a singular verb. A tense stays the same unless the time really changes. An edit question wants the corrected pair, not a new paragraph.

  • Vocabulary in context

Give the meaning the passage is using. A synonym must fit back into the sentence. If it does not fit, it is the wrong sense of the word.

  • Register

Formal writing uses complete sentences and no slang. Informal writing may be warmer, but it still has to be clear. Mixing a formal opening with a slang ending loses the register mark.

These conventions are the language section of Paper 1 (80 marks in total). One error, corrected, is the whole answer when that is what was asked.

Worked example

Afrikaans First Additional Language, Graad 12. Register and tone. Gebruik net hierdie vyf sinne, nie ’n sin uit ’n ander les nie.

Simplified approach

Reël, vyf eie voorbeelde, een fout wat leerders maak, dan ’n kort toets.

Culture note

First Additional Language in Afrikaans First Additional Language: die eksaminator merk die reël op die sin wat gevra is.

Step 1 / 4

Reël

Register is how formal the words are for this reader. Register and tone in Afrikaans First Additional Language loses marks when a formal task slides into slang.

Example 1 / 20

Vraestel 1 begrip, Graad 12.

    aanhaling
  3. 03

    Kontroleer

Die aanhaling ondersteun die gedagte. ’n Aanhaling oor net die reën sou die punt mis.

How we got there

Read this like a teacher at the board. We go slowly, name every number, and say why we take each step.

1. What is the question asking?

Read the question twice. Circle the unknown. Underline every number and unit. The paper is asking: Vraestel 1 begrip, Graad 12. Leesstuk: “Die tou by die kliniek skuif stadig vorentoe ná die reën. ’n Verpleegster roep die volgende naam, en die seun bly op sy plek.” Wat is die hoofgedagte? Haal vier woorde aan wat dit bewys.

In other words — as if you have never seen this before

If you have never seen this before: Die hoofgedagte lê in die hele leesstuk, nie in een interessante woord nie. Die aanhaling moet uit die teks kom. We will name a method in words, write the formula with no numbers, then substitute one line at a time.

2. What do we already know?

’n NSS-lengte leesstuk

3. Which method — and why this one?

Die hoofgedagte lê in die hele leesstuk, nie in een interessante woord nie. Die aanhaling moet uit die teks kom.

4. Step-by-step working

  1. 01 / 06

    Punt

Hy verlaat nie die tou nie. Die verpleegster roep die volgende naam en hy bly.

hoofgedagte: hy wag sy beurt af

Why this step: We only do one job per line so a marker can follow the marks — and so you can find a slip without starting over.

  2. 02 / 06

    Pas die reël toe

Haal net aan wat gedruk is: “roep die volgende naam”.

    aanhaling

Why this step: We only do one job per line so a marker can follow the marks — and so you can find a slip without starting over.

  3. 03 / 06

    Kontroleer

Die aanhaling ondersteun die gedagte. ’n Aanhaling oor net die reën sou die punt mis.

    aanhaling pas by die punt

Why this step: We only do one job per line so a marker can follow the marks — and so you can find a slip without starting over.

  4. 04 / 06

    Step G — Sense-check the size

Ask: is this the kind of number a Grade 10–12 paper would want? A speed of 3 000 ms for a learner walking, or a probability bigger than 1, means a unit or algebra slip. Estimate first: round the numbers and do the sum in your head.

Why this step: Markers write ‘unrealistic’ in the margin when the method is right but the size is wild. A 10-second head check often finds a missing 10² or a unit that never changed.

  5. 05 / 06

Step F — Box the answer with its unit

Die seun bly in die tou totdat sy naam geroep word. Bewys: “roep die volgende naam”.

Why this step: A number without a unit is half a mark on a Physics paper, and a marker can miss a Maths answer that is buried in working.

  6. 06 / 06

Step H — What the marker is looking for

On an NSC memo you usually earn: (1) a method mark for naming the right formula or idea in words, (2) an accuracy mark for substituting the given numbers with units, (3) an accuracy mark for the boxed answer with its unit. Write those three lines even if you are unsure of the arithmetic — blank pages score zero.

Why this step: First-timers chase the final number and leave the method blank. The memo still pays out for the idea and the substitution even when the last line is wrong.

5. The answer

Die seun bly in die tou totdat sy naam geroep word. Bewys: “roep die volgende naam”.

6. Check it like a marker

Moenie ’n oorlog, ’n metafoor of ’n gevoel byvoeg wat die leesstuk nie noem nie. Begripspunte bly binne die teks.

7. A trap first-timers fall into

First-timers often grab the first formula they remember, mix units (cm with m, minutes with seconds), or drop a minus sign. Write the formula in words first: “this equals that, because…”
